10 Life Lessons 2016 Taught Me

I feel like 2016 could be accurately summed up by the memes that are circulating the internet right now. I definitely feel like I am leaving 2016 a little bit more worse for wear than I was entering it. Not to say that it was a horrible year, but it definitely had its struggles and taught me some life lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. You don't always get what you want and when you want it.
This one seems pretty cliche, however I feel like it can be difficult to not loose focus when what you want seems so far from your grasps. I have found that the easiest way to stay motivated when you feel like your goals are light years away is to take a moment, step back, and remember the reason why you want the things you want. You may find out you no longer want them and that is okay too, but doing this can keep you on the path to getting where you want to be. When I say step back, really take some me time to think, go for a walk, a ride, just get out and away from the things that are bogging you down and just breathe and think (sometimes listening to music can help too!)

2. Be careful what you wish for, and make sure you are ready for what you are asking for.
Other people can make things look very easy when they have been doing something a lot longer than you have, and it can be difficult to not compare yourself to successful people who are in the position you want to be in. Make sure you know what you are asking for and are ready for all the responsibility that comes with it. Often you do not see how much hard work it took that person to get where they are today.

3. Don't base your wants and desires off of things you see working for others, because their circumstances are different from yours.
We have all heard "what works for some may not work for others," but this can be said about many things in life. You should find out what you want and what is going to make you happy and not try to follow the same path as others because they seem happy. Social media only shows a snip-it of what life is like on the opposite end of the cellphone, everyone has their struggles, people that appear happy can often not be.

4. Do something right the first time around.
Because you know you are going to get really pissed off going back and fixing your messy mistakes and that is time you could spend doing something else.

5. Everyone has their own struggles and there is always going to be someone who is not having the best of days.
You never know if someone's family member just passed away yesterday, someone is facing an internal struggle or turmoil, or just lost their job. Try to stay as positive as possible when people are trying to bring you down, because often when they see they can't, their attitude will change and can often be influenced by your positivity.

6. People are not always going to have the same vision as you.
Sometimes it may seem like you are talking to a brick wall or speaking another language, but just remember sometimes people are not going to understand the same things you do or share the same vision when it comes to completely projects or everyday tasks. Just because someone does something a different way than you do does not mean that they are doing that same thing incorrectly.

7. People are not mind readers and can not automatically assume what you want.
It is extremely important to be clear about what you want from others, because what they see as acceptable, may not be what you wanted or needed.

8. Do not assume that someone knows the same things you do or has the same common sense, attitude, beliefs, or mind set you do.
You know that saying when you assume you make an "ass" of "u" and "me."

9. Running your mouth or talking negatively about others makes you look worse than the person you are talking about.
And its not worth it. We are all human beings, we all can feel pain, there is no reason you should knowingly bring another person down because they do not feel the same way you do or do the same things you do. Just zip your lips...enough said.

10. Its okay to feel dumb sometimes, but its not okay to feel like you are smarter then everyone else, you never know who you are sharing a room with!

If you got through this entire post, let me know 1 thing that 2016 taught you in the comments.

       Happy New Year!
